Gautam Gambhir's bowlers responded well to his call of bowling first, restricting New Zealand with smart, accurate bowling, and the captain reciprocated with a fluent 138 off 116 balls to make the chase look easy.

Ganguly to play Ranji Trophy to prepare for IPL


Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is set to play in the Ranji Trophy for his state side Bengal, in a bid to attain top form and fitness ahead of IPL 2011. He will turn out in the match against Tamil Nadu that begins in Chennai on December 1.

Kohli and Ashwin set up comfortable win


Virat Kohli's first century batting first, his fourth overall and second in a row, set up an eventually comfortable win for India, who are yet to lose an international in the current home season. India did lose their way in the last 10 overs of both innings. They lost their last six wickets for 26, and were given anxious moments by a 67-run ninth-wicket stand between Kyle Mills and Nathan McCullum.

Gambhir excited by captaincy challenge


Gautam Gambhir has said he is looking forward to the "great challenge" of leading India in the one-day series against New Zealand which starts on Sunday in Guwahati. It's been a hectic season for the home side, and with the much-anticipated tour of South Africa coming up next month, India have rested many of their heavyweights - including regular captain MS Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh - for the first two ODIs against New Zealand.

This is the last opportunity for the two teams to play one-dayers in Indian conditions, before the World Cup. In that regard, this is an important series for them to get their combinations right, ahead of the big tournament.

Kirsten to depart early for SA


Gary Kirsten, India's coach, will accompany the players who are to leave early for South Africa so they can acclimatise for the upcoming tour. Eric Simons, India's bowling coach, will take over the coaching duties for the final two one-dayers against New Zealand as Kirsten heads home.
