Even as punters had a field day during India-Australia cricket World Cup quarter-final match in Ahmedabad with bets being placed on Ponting being out for a duck, Tendulkar scoring his 100th century to Yuvraj becoming man of the match for the fourth consecutive time, bookies operating in the Tricity are bracing themselves for Wednesday for what is being expected to be the mother-of-all clashes when India squares off against Pakistan in the semi-final at PCA Stadium in Mohali on March 30.
Local boy Yuvraj Singh, who has had a stellar tournament till now, is slated to be the pick of those placing bets as they expect Yuvi (as he is popularly known) to cart fours and sixes off Pakistani bowling and claim the man of the match award for the fifth consecutive time.
Another favourite in these parts, Harbhajan Singh, is also slated to be among those on whom millions of rupees would be bet upon. Bhajji (popular name for Harbhajan) has not had a great tournament by any stretch of the imagination and fans, bookies and expectant bet-placers are hoping that he comes good in the match that matters.
The question of cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar reaching his 100th century during the semi-final is also being talked about and many bet-placers feel that the batting maestro would reach the century of centuries at Mohali against arch-rivals Pakistan.
Speaking to TOI, a bookie on condition of anonymity, said ''Apart from the usual win-loss bet and session bets, there were a large number of people from the region placing bets on Indian players reaching milestones during the India-Australia match. This aspect added to the excitement, not only for bet-placers but for us as well. We stood to lose a large sum of money if the bets were realized, but barring only Yuvi becoming man of the match, the rest of the bets earned us a healthy bank balance.''
Ashish, a resident of Sector-16, said, ''The upcoming match would see a lot of bets being placed on Sachin, Sehwag, Yuvraj as well as Zaheer as the match realistically hinges of these four players performing well.''
