Finally UDRS speaks for India

The Indian cricket team finally saw the right side of the UDRS and must be grateful to Australian umpire Rod Tucker. On Sunday at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Alex Cusack, the Irish number seven, was struck on the pads by a Yuvraj Singh straighter one. Tucker turned down the loud appeal and following a quick discussion, the Indians went for the review.

Like the other night when Billy Bowden had declared England's Ian Bell not out and stuck to his decision despite television evidence indicating otherwise, all the parameters were ticked by the TV umpire, save for an additional line that said the ball still had more than 2.5 metres to go before it hit the stumps.

That's where the similarity ended. With the distance being what it was, the decision was back in the onfield umpire's domain. Now Tucker would have been well within the law to stick to his original decision. But then unlike Bowden last Sunday, Tucker was moved enough by the clear evidence that the ball was headed to the stumps and gracefully reversed his decision.

It was a simple matter of applying common sense, the final call giving a pleading Yuvraj his first five-wicket haul in One-dayers. Ironically enough, Bowden was the other on-field umpire.
