When India take on South Africa in the high profile World Cup cricket tie at Vidarbha Cricket Association ( VCA ) stadium at Jamtha on Saturday, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport will once again witness a busy day as several chartered flights would be winging their way in ferrying hundreds of cricket fans.
Nagpur Airport will play host to 15 to 20 aircraft including at least three non-scheduled one-a Kingfisher ATR aircraft, special Jet Air Boeing-737, and another GoAir flight- besides the 13 scheduled flights that land and take off from here every day.
On Saturday, the number of chartered flights would be less than on December 3 when 41 non-scheduled flights landed here for reception of BJP leader Nitin Gadkari son's wedding and the airport handled 54 flights in all. However, the airport will once again get a chance to prove itself ready for a busier schedule, more connecting flight operations, and better services for passengers, sources at airport said.
"By Thursday evening, at least two chartered planes had confirmed their arrival. Both will land with VIP guests on Saturday afternoon and will take off for Mumbai on Sunday morning," informed chief operating officer (CEO) of MIPL Abadesh Prasad. "A few more chartered flights may confirm their schedule by Friday evening. MIPL is ready to handle and permit all airlines who want to park aircraft here", Prasad told TOI.
The airport now has capacity to park 18 wide body aircraft. Of these, seven parking bays are reserved for scheduled flights while remaining 11 bays are available. These newly developed bays have proper markings and lighting arrangements. "Nagpur airport has developed five barking bays in old apron area and they would be used if more aircraft land here," Prasad added.
Meanwhile, airport sources informed that all scheduled airlines like Air India, Jet Lite, and Indigo that operate morning flights to Nagpur, especially from Mumbai, Pune and Delhi are already overbooked. Hardly a few tickets were available and that too at very high prices on some afternoon flights. Go Air has planned to operate special Mumbai-Nagpur flight on Saturday though it is meant to take the cricket crowd back on Sunday morning. It would arrive here from Mumbai at 10.30 pm on Saturday and depart for Mumbai at 5.30 am on Sunday, a travel agent informed.
Based on earlier experience, Air Traffic Control ( ATC) managed by Airports Authority of India (AAI) is also ready and has made arrangements for smooth flights operations, airport director A K Verma. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has also increased security cover at airport for the arriving VIPs and cricket fans, deputy commandant, Pranit Chandra said.
